We call it Kiribati today, but it was the Gilbert and Ellice Islands in November 1943 when 1,000 Americans were killed and 2,000 wounded in the course of taking the island back from the Japanese. Note that the transmitters of Radio Tarawa were located on Betio, the main island on which the landing took place. At the bottom, a 1948 verl from New Zealand.
