March 1993

Many of us can remember when the shortwave broadcasting scene in Ethiopia changed radically. It was 1978.

The standard Ethiopian log had been Radio Ethiopia, whose OSL is shown at the top left. Note the photograph of long time Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie on the postage stamps.

When the forces of the revolution took over the country, the station was closed down and replaced by the Voice of Revolutionary Ethiopia. The Voice of Revolutionary Ethiopia devised a convenient strategy for increasing lt's coverage: take over someone else's station, specifically ETLF, Radio Voice of the Gospel, a high power Christian broadcasting station owned by the Lutheran World Federation. It had been transmitting since 1963 with 100 kw from a 40 acre site near Addis Ababa.
